Director’s Welcome

James M. Lindsay

Globalization is profoundly altering the lives of people around the world and raising tough questions for policymakers and citizens alike. What role should the United States play in a world in which new political powers are emerging? Will science and technology help us solve global challenges or deliver the future of our nightmares? Can we find the energy sources needed to power our economies without wreaking irreversible damage on our environment? Will countries learn to cooperate in a world in which problems such as terrorism, crime, and disease easily cross borders and defy unilateral solutions?

The Robert S. Strauss Center is dedicated to increasing public understanding of these and other global challenges. We promote the discussion of foreign policy issues on the campus of the University of Texas and in the Austin community by sponsoring events on a wide range of subjects and featuring a diverse array of views. We work to generate policy-relevant research by our distinguished faculty and to disseminate the results to policymakers, business and civic leaders, journalists, students, and interested citizens of Texas and elsewhere. We operate on the belief that bridging the world of ideas and the world of action is essential to realizing the promise of globalization and averting its dangers.

We are proud that the Center is named for Ambassador Robert S. Strauss. In his long and distinguished career as a successful lawyer, businessman and an adviser to presidents from Lyndon Johnson and Jimmy Carter to Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, he has embodied the values that guide our efforts: civility, innovation, and leadership. We seek to encourage broad and respectful debate from across the political spectrum; find practical solutions to pressing global problems; and prepare faculty and students to become leaders in an increasingly complex international environment.

We hope that you will visit this website often to find out more about global policy issues. We also welcome your participation in Strauss Center events and programs. If you have any questions about the Center, please contact us.
